About Us

Wood, the oldest building material known to humans, holds a revered place in the culture of Bastar's tribes. For centuries, they have skillfully crafted intricate articles from durable Teak wood. Moreover, wooden artifacts play a significant role in their rituals and traditions, weaving a deep connection between the community, nature, and their heritage.

The Madiya tribe of Bastar, Chhattisgarh, pays tribute to their ancestors with wooden columns featuring carvings that depict their notable deeds and accomplishments.
It says Madiya Khamba (माड़िया खम्बा) (pole).

In the 1980s, Mr. Bhattacharya, a retired officer from the A.G. Audit Department in Jagdalpur, had a passion for art that dates back to his youth. He received training in crafting wooden blocks at the renowned Shantiniketan in Kolkata, where he honed his skills to create beautiful, artistic pieces.

Mr. Bhattacharya elevated folk wood crafting to an exquisite art form, creating original designs that continue to inspire. Even today, a staggering 80% of artworks in this genre are based on his pioneering creations. As the patriarch of this art form, He has selflessly mentored numerous students over 10-15 years, ensuring the tradition's continuation.

In 1980, Mrs. Madhuri Pandit and Late Mr. R.V. Pandit embarked on a journey to learn the traditional Bastar's art. After 19 years of immersion in the region's culture, the couple relocated to Bhopal, where they shared their expertise with numerous students. Notably, they have preserved the art's authenticity, refraining from commercializing it to this day.

The art designs are broadly categorized into two styles: traditional Folk Art and modern Contemporary. The Folk Art style authentically depicts the rural lifestyle and traditions of the villages, while the modern style incorporates religious themes, symbolic motifs, and other innovative designs.

The intricate carvings are primarily done on teak wood, using traditional techniques that rely solely on hand tools. Notably, the entire process is done manually, without the use of any machinery, ensuring a truly handmade and unique piece of art.
